Garcia Design, Inc. provided planning, site design, landscape architecture, and permit services for this culturally & politically sensitive project located on a very small site on East 11th Street near downtown Austin. The design team was charged with restoration of a historic house which was originally owned by freed slaves. The house serves as a cultural museum. A new building serves for the promotion and development of arts and local businesses. Two unique landscapes were built. The area around the house appears as a prairie of tall grasses. The courtyard area over the garage roof is a contemporary modern landscape composed of planters, gravel, stone & concrete. The project is LEED Gold certified.
